Community Emergency Response Team (Cert)
Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD)

DESCRIPTION
Train citizens in basic disaster response skills; such as fire suppression, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), basic first aid, Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and disaster psychology as to enable citizens to take a more active role in emergency preparedness.

These classes provide certifications needed for deployment with CCAR.

COST
Free to Chester County residents and/or business employees in the county!
Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Free backpack full of disaster/safety supplies!
(e.g. OSHA-approved 25-person first aid kit, Ambu rescue mask)

TRAINING DATES - 2009
Each session is a two-day class, Thursday evening, and the following Saturday. You must attend both Thursday and Saturday classes.

Session I March 5 & 7
Session II May 7 & 9
Session III August 13 & 15
Session IV November 12 & 14

TIMES
Thursday classes start at 5:30 pm and end by 9:30 pm
-Hot dinner provided

Saturday classes start at 8:30 am and end by 4:00 pm
-Hot breakfast and deli-style lunch provided

In 2001...the National Weather Service and Meteorological Services Of Canada began using a new and improved wind chill temperature index. The new index was designed to calculate a more accurate reading of how the cold air feels on the human skin.

Normally...when a winter storm is imminent...the National Weather Service will issue a WINTER STORM or BLIZZARD WARNING 12 to 18 hours before the storm strikes.

A WINTER STORM WARNING means that severe winter weather such as heavy snow...significant freezing rain...or heavy sleet is expected.

BE PREPARED...BEFORE THE STORM STRIKES!

Normally...when a winter storm is expected...the National Weather Service will issue a WINTER STORM WATCH 24 to 48 hours in advance. A WINTER STORM WATCH means that conditions exist for the possible occurrence of severe winter weather such as blizzard conditions...heavy snow...significant freezing rain...or heavy sleet.

TODAYS TOPIC: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WINTER FORECAST TERMINOLOGY.

FREEZING RAIN: rain that freezes upon contact with a cold surface.

SLEET: Solid grains of ice that form from rain that freezes before reaching the ground. These pellets of ice tend to bounce upon contact and may accumulate enough to cover the ground...even to a depth of several inches.
