BE PREPARED...BEFORE THE STORM STRIKES!

Normally...when a winter storm is expected...the National Weather Service will issue a WINTER STORM WATCH 24 to 48 hours in advance. A WINTER STORM WATCH means that conditions exist for the possible occurrence of severe winter weather such as blizzard conditions...heavy snow...significant freezing rain...or heavy sleet.

TODAYS TOPIC: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WINTER FORECAST TERMINOLOGY.

FREEZING RAIN: rain that freezes upon contact with a cold surface.

SLEET: Solid grains of ice that form from rain that freezes before reaching the ground. These pellets of ice tend to bounce upon contact and may accumulate enough to cover the ground...even to a depth of several inches.

As we move into late fall...it is once again time to refresh your memory about winter weather hazards and how you can plan for the life threatening situations that winter weather can bring.

Each year...many people take winter weather too lightly...which often results in serious injury or even death.

Be among the first to find out and stay informed during an emergency. ReadyNotifyPA, is a community alert system that allows citizens and visitors to sign up free for a variety of emergency alerts from severe weather to threats to our homeland security to traffic alerts. Subscribers have the option of receiving alerts via E-mail, personal digital assistants (PDAs) or cell phones.

Messages are not limited to where you work or live. In fact, if you work in Philadelphia, live in Chester County and have a spouse working in Montgomery County, you can sign up for alerts about all of the areas you care about.

Skywarn Recognition Day is December 6

The 10th Annual SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) Special Event will take place Saturday, December 6, 2008 . SRD is co-sponsored by the ARRL and the National Weather Service (NWS) as a way to recognize the commitment made by Amateur Radio operators in helping to keep their communities safe. According to SRD Coordinator David Floyd, N5DBZ, Amateur Radio operators can visit their local participating NWS office , working as a team to contact other hams across the world throughout the 24 hour event.

Delco EC Sums Up Recent Lessons Learned

Recently District EC Bob Famiglio, K3RF, put a call out for a limited number of volunteers to assist with the Philadelphia Airport Emergency Preparedness Exercise. Delco EC Bob Wilson, W3BIG, took on the last-minute planning and coordination duties. With this event and the recent effort to get District operators from the five-county area participating together in training events, W3BIG sums up his lessons learned.
